Our Story
How It Began It started when we learned about conservationists. Conservationists are people like Jane Goodall, Steve Irwin, Rachel Carson, Jeff Corwin and John Muir. They are scientists who try to help save the environment through the work they do.
Once we understood the concept of conservation and sustainability we started to think of project ideas. We came up with two final ideas; composting and working in the park. We decided to start contacting people who worked in our local park. This is when we met Christina who works with the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park. She told us about the major issue with invasive plants in the park. A great deal of the work that the Friends do is trying to educate others about this problem. Our project emerged. Questions 1. How can we help protect the native species of Van Cortlandt Park? 2. What is an invasive plant? Where does it come from and how do they take over? 3. What are the native, non-native and invasive plants of VCP? |
Our Disney Planet Goal
Our environmental goal is to stop invasive plants from destroying the native ecosystem of Van Cortlandt Park. We will create a website, do plant removal and teach others how to remove invasive plants on Volunteer Day.
